| Last week there was an incident with a business in Christchurch whose system was hacked by some offshore hackers based in Nigeria. These hackers managed to get into the system, change the banking details on an invoice emailed to a customer for $25,000. This money was paid by the clients customer into an altered bank account, the funds were withdrawn and the account closed. There is little to no recourse for the client to recover the $25,000.
With the increasing use of the internet as a means of doing business efficiently this highlights a major risk that is becoming more prevalent. We strongly advise our clients to contact their IT provider and discuss further IT protection as well as contacting us to discuss insurance options to insure against Cyber attacks.. |
